Energetic Protons, Radionuclides and Magnetic Activity in Protostellar Disks

چکیده
We calculate the location of the magnetically-inactive dead zone in the minimum-mass protosolar disk, under ionization scenarios including stellar Xrays, longor short-lived radionuclide decay, and energetic protons arriving from the general interstellar medium, from a nearby supernova explosion, from the disk corona, or from the corona of the young star. The disk contains a dead zone in all scenarios except those with small dust grains removed and a fraction of the shortlived radionuclides remaining in the gas. All the cases without exception have an “undead zone” where intermediate resistivities prevent magneto-rotational turbulence while allowing shear-generated large-scale magnetic fields. The mass column in the undead zone is typically greater than the column in the turbulent surface layers. The results support the idea that the dead and undead zones are robust consequences of cold, dusty gas with mass columns exceeding 1000 g cm. Polarization of Fir Emission from T Tauri Disks
Recent observation of 850μm sub-mm polarization from T Tauri disks opens up the possibility of studying magnetic field structure within protostellar disks. The degree of polarization is around 3 % and the direction of polarization is perpendicular to the disk. Since thermal emission from dust grains dominates the spectral energy distribution at the sub-mm/FIR regime, dust grains are thought to ...
متن کاملMagnetohydrodynamics of Protostellar Disks
The magnetohydrodynamical behavior (MHD) of accretion disks is reviewed. A detailed presentation of the fundamental MHD equations appropriate for protostellar disks is given. The combination of a weak (subthermal) magnetic field and Keplerian rotation is unstable to the magnetorotational instability (MRI), if the degree of ionization in the disk is sufficiently high. The MRI produces enhanced a...

Magnetically mediated disk outflows are a leading paradigm to explain winds and jets in a variety of astrophysical sources, but where do the fields come from? Since accretion of mean magnetic flux may be disfavored in a thin turbulent disk, and only fields generated with sufficiently large scale can escape before being shredded by turbulence, in situ field production is desirable. Nonlinear hel...
متن کاملThe stability of protostellar disks with Hall effect and buoyancy
The stability properties of inviscid protostellar disks are examined taking into account the Hall effect and buoyancy. Depending on the parameters, different types of instabilities can exist in different regions of disks. In a very low ionized region, the instability associated with baroclinic effects of buoyancy is likely most efficient. The Hall-driven shear instability can lead to destabiliz...
متن کاملMagnetic Braking and Protostellar Disk Formation: Ambipolar Diffusion
It is established that the formation of rotationally supported disks during the main accretion phase of star formation is suppressed by a moderately strong magnetic field in the ideal MHD limit. Non-ideal MHD effects are expected to weaken the magnetic braking, perhaps allowing the disk to reappear. We concentrate on one such effect, ambipolar diffusion, which enables the field lines to slip re...
